A cool travel watch!

Here's a pretty darn cool travel watch you might want to pick up, I'm thinking about it.  It's a Casio, not my favorite brand, but for your travels - it could work.  Why?  It's a rugged ass watch that will server you well as you bump and grind to your next travel destination but it also looks pretty cool.   Two of it's best features are it's durability and and it's waterproof-ness.  Is waterproofness a word?

    * Shock resistant, daily alarm 4 daily and 1 snooze alarm, approx. battery life 2 years.
    * 200m water resistant, backlight auto LED light with afterglow with 12/24-hour formats.
    * Anti-magnetic structure, accuracy +/- 15 seconds per month with 29 world time zones.
    * Hourly Time Signal, 1/1000th Second Stopwatch with Speed Indicator.
    * Auto-Calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2099).

It's also cool because it's military looking, so that means you can wear it and pretend to be Arnold Schwarzenegger trooping around the jungles.  So check it out further at Amazon where you can pick one up for $99 bucks.

Rihanna's newest video is out

Do you remember 3-4 weeks ago when some Irish farmer got all pissed off at Rihanna for walking on his land topless?   Well that video, "We found love", is out.  Watch it below to see what all the commotion was about.  It also features British boxer/model Dudley O'Shaughnessy.

What do you all think?  Too wild?  No big deal?  I'd liked to have been Dudley, and I'd even had done it for free!  See how nice I am?

Weather around the Caribbean

I love this time of year, it's getting cooler and the leaves are changing.  But it's also the time of year we usually make our annual track to Jamaica where it's an endless summer.  Today it's going to be in the mid 60's here in Los Angeles but around the Caribbean we have a different story...

and

If you're up in New York you're facing weather that's in the lower 60's and Denver you're seeing snow and the lower 30's as a high!   Yikes!

Internet at Hedonism II

If you're new to Hedonism II, aka Hedo II or H2, then you might want to know more about internet options at the famous resort.  Honestly it's the type of place where you REALLY don't need to be checking your e-mail or Facebook'ing but for some, internet access is a necessary evil.

Well you'll be glad to know that you got 2 options these days...

(now you can even surf the web in the dinning room, or drink)

#1. The decade old Internet Cafe which has 4 computers.  You'll need to pay the front desk a fee for usage then you can hope on these recently updated machines and enjoy some decent internet speeds.   I think the cost is around $8US for 15 mins of use.

#2.  The resort now has WiFi.  You have to pay for this as well and it's not perfect but it's there.  At last check the prices stood at $90 for seven days or $15 a day.  They have WiFi antennas aimed at the H block, some of the prude side rooms.  There's also an antenna on the nude bar corner and aimed at the beach.

Do you try to save power when staying at a hotel?

When on the road does it come to mind to switch off lights and/or TVs when not in use? For me, sometimes, but not as much as if I'm home. There's a story out there stating that nationwide hotels spend $2,200 per room each year in electricty and water costs. So some hotel chains are on the move to save money by letting their hotel guests about wasted energy.

How about just going green when you travel? Forget trying to help a hotel extend their bottom line, but don't forget about Mother Earth. It's so very easy to get into this "vacation" frame of mind while you're away from home but wasted water/power is still wasted. So maybe just switch off a light or two before heading out for dinner.

Food for thought on a Sunday morning.

Grotto Bay in Bremuda - a quick review

Grotto Bay Resort in Bremuda has a way cool beach and mysterious grotto would make this 21-acre resort stand out on any island.   But, on sometimes-pricey Bermuda, it's one of the few all-inclusive options.

Snorkelers and divers love the private beach with an off-shore shipwreck to explore.  And the spa in a cave is a unique amenity.  It's open year round, but temperatures do drop in winter.

(Check out the resort on Google Maps)

While staying at Grotto Bay you can enjoy activities such as bike riding, water sports, sailing, tennis such as golf, diving, Average room price: $454 based on from October 15th to November 15th, 2011 for two adults in one room.

An employee of Marriott hotel quits with a marching band

Did you all see this?  It's a Youtube video of a man who had worked for a Marriott Hotel for 3 and a half years, got pissed off and quit using a marching band.  Joey and his friends get all setup and at 1:55 in the clip the manager shows up and things turn wacky.

Is this going over the top or was it justified?   Joey complained of hotel work conditions for not just him but maids too.  "Housekeepers are reprimanded if they fail to clean 16 rooms or more in a 9 hour shift. Anyone who speaks up--especially anyone who is openly pro-union--is disciplined or fired."

Marriott then said themselves, "You know that we take employee satisfaction very seriously as a company - creating a sense of community and pride within our hotels is a top priority. The Renaissance Providence actually has a number of employee programs in place that encourage health, wellness and employee satisfaction. While this is an unfortunate way for an employee to resign, we are confident that hotel management works closely with staff to continue to find ways to make the hotel a rewarding place to work for everyone."

Score cheap airfare w/Southwest & AirTran

What do you do when business slows?  Have a sale!  Both Southwest, and its subsidiary, AirTrans are releasing some pretty amazing rates - as low as $35 one way.  Flights of 450 miles or less are on sale for $35 each way – or less than $95 round-trip, even when taxes and fees are included.

(I could fly from Los Angesles to Las Vegas for $88)

For flights between 451 and 1,000 miles, sale fares are $65 each way (plus taxes and fees).
That jumps to $95 each way for flights of 1,001 to 1,500 miles and tops out at $125 each way for flights of more than 1,500 miles.

If you want in on the action you must book your tickets by the end of the day Thursday but then they are good for travel from November 30th through December 14th 2011 and from January 4th through February 15th, 2012.

Rum Review - Mount Gay Extra Old

Ok...so is a rum I've NOT had the pleasure of sipping, but I want to give it a go.  Next time I see it at the market, it's mine.  Mount Gay is the founder of all rum, really, and it's from the amazing island of Barbados so whats not to love?

Read this excerpt from www.refinedvices.com...

The Mount Gay Estate is one of the oldest estates in the Caribbean, and definitely the oldest on Barbados. Many believe rum has been produced on the estate as early as 1663, which is the year William Sandiford bought the estate.

The estate included a still that was capable of producing rum, but the only legal and the oldest written evidence of rum production in the estate is from 1703, making Mount Gay the oldest rum producer in the world.

(generally priced from $25 to $35)

Mount Gay Extra Old rum begins its life like most other rums, in the sugar cane field where the cane is harvested, crushed and the resulting juice heated to extract sugar crystals and of course, molasses.

At Mount Gay the molasses are fermented up to 72 hours, which results in the molasses having around 6 to 7% of alcohol. The fermented molasses is distilled in pot and column stills after which the distillate is transported to St. Michael for barrel aging and diluting with coral filtered water.

The distilled sugar cane spirit is matured in 200 liter oak barrels from Kentucky which are only used three times to age rum before being replaced by newer barrels. Some of the rums reserved for the blend of Mount Gay Extra Old are aged up to 17 years in these barrels before being blended in large tanks, overseen by the Master Blender, Allen Smith.

Appearance
The color is sparkly amber with brighter yellow highlights.

Nose
Gentle floral and buttered aromas are drifting near the mouth when the rum is first poured into the glass, later revealing caramel and creamy vanilla with bourbon and coconut undercurrents.

Taste
The flavors are initially warm and tingly from the alcohol, but are quickly subdued by sweet caramel and light wood notes that are further softened by bourbon and vanilla. A slight bitterness remains on the tongue, however.

Aftertaste
The rum leaves a nice spicy glow in the mouth and the bitterness from the taste has almost disappeared, allowing a few earthy bourbon notes to come through with caramel. Mount Gay Extra Old finishes in copper with bitter coffee beans that dissolve into a lasting balm of crème de caramel.

Final thoughts
While not overwhelmingly complex or mind blowing, Mount Gay Extra Old is a nice sipping rum and no doubt works well in many cocktails, the rum old fashioned being one of my favorites.  It is not too rare or expensive in such use either which easily makes it one of my staple rums that I can drink often enough without being afraid of the wallet going empty.

Topanga Ranch Motel in Malibu

I was cruising up the PCH in Malibu this weekend when I saw these old ass looking bungalows on the east part of the PCH, Google Map.  The name on the sign read, Topanga Ranch Motel.  But what the heck were they?  Time for some California research!

Come to find out they were built in the early 1920’s to house the workers who built the Pacific Coast Highway, and today, these 30 red & white bungalows still stand.  This site received Historical status some time ago and since 2001 is a part of the Topanga State Park, with a supposed $2 million set aside recently for restoration.

The only inhabitant these days is the Park Ranger.  You will not be able to stay there anytime soon. One can stop however and have a look, and while you are there enjoy a meal or a drink at the Reel Inn a very casual seafood restaurant that shares the same parking lot.  It seems the last paying guests were around 2007 then they shut this historic hotel down.

What will end up happening to the hotel?  Only time will tell.  Read more about Topanga Ranch Motel here:  www.malibutimes.com/hotel.

Take a cruise to Jamaica - in 1912

So I've been on a bit of a history kick lately in terms of travel, but it's so cool, so how can I not like it?   Do you all like this stuff?   Plus it's great when I run low on current travel topics to blog about.  I just hop in my virtual time machine called Google News Archives and travel back in time.  There's a ton of travel news that's interesting from years past.

So when I started cruising the archives for something to blog about I found this advertisement in the Boston Evening Transcript from May 28th, 1912.  It's an ad featuring a few cruise choices from the New York area into the warm waters of the Caribbean.

(cool Caribbean clothes there family)

For the amazing low low price of just $140 you could have sailed from New York to the Caribbean and back on this 24 night steam ship cruise.   How much is $140 in 2011 money?  I found a site that has retro pricing, according to it, $3,243.  How much is a comparable 24 night cruise these days?   Around $7,613 for a 18 night Silver Sea cruise.  So it looks like deal of yesteryear was pretty good!  Pretty groovy huh?

Hire a porn star for an hour, for a night

Sierra is a former (still kinda in it) porn star out of Chicago.  She's 39 and still in the game, but now you can have a personal visit with her!   Starting out at $500 for 1 hour, you can see Sierra in her in Chicago or if you're lucky, she travels around and you could catch her then.

But to hire a porn star, is that nuts?  On her site she say's she's tested and safe.  In fact, she won't even see YOU unless you've done this sort of thing at least twice in your life, she wants referrals.  If you make it past all of that she'll allow you to take photos and/or video during your session.

Sierra was always known as being a very very busty (36F-26-36) natural ebony beauty who was pretty willing to do whatever on film.  She's still looking fine at age 39 these days and still has that very curvy body.  It's not for me to do, but I don't judge!

So if you're down to hook up with Sierra, visit her site at: www.sierrassecret.com.

Kim Kardashian - hotel owner?

So there's a rumor going around that super hottie, Kim Kardashian, wants to open up a hotel in Dubai.  The rumor is so solid that even The Wall Street Journal published a story on the topic, so it might be true.

According to Kim herself...

"I was telling my sisters, we've got to start up a hotel in Dubai and design all the different rooms and floors," Kardashian told reporters at a press conference. "I like to pay attention to what my fan base is really asking for, whether it's hair and make-up, clothing brands...everything I think will be successful here."

Would a Kim K backed hotel fly in Dubai?  Dubai does have it's share of unusual hotels, but in this tipsy economy Kim would need investors and I'm thinking those investors might be hesitant to back a hotel based on Kim's lack of hotel experience.  But I'd like to see it happen!

A cool print of Jamaica from 1888

Back in September of 2010 I blogged about a way cool 1886 print of a ship in Jamaica.   If you read the post you can see it's an old print out of a local newspaper from the year 1886.  I was so intrigued by it, that I bought it.   These days I have it framed and hanging in my home.  A bit of Jamaican history, both the good and bad.

Here's another piece from the same company via Amazon.com.  This time we have a print from 1888 that was used in The Illustrated London News.   This print was featured on page 1 of that issue and shows ladies in Jamaica moving baskets down near the docks.

(Size is approx 15 X 11 inches)
According to the company, "All Are Genuine Antique Victorian Prints And Not Modern Copies."  To place an order click the link below.  Will I end up buying this one as well?  Probably, and they only have 4 left so I better get on it!

A Casa Montego ad from 1961

I found this way cool ad from The Financial Post that was put out November 11th, 1961.  The ad was pitching the recently built Casa Montego Motel.  It's interesting to see that in order to book a room, you need to call your local travel agent.  Jez, times have changed.

From what I can find this 100 room hotel has been around since 1957 and was pretty popular in the 60's, 70's and even the 80's.  One person claims it's still open but in pretty bad shape.  Others reports have the hotel vacant for a number of years.  I think the building is still there, but perhaps empty.

(The 8 story Casa Montego in 1965)

There's a lot of history in Montego Bay, but for this hotel, 50 years seems like all she had.  If anyone has more info, please comment.  I love researching the "old" Jamaica when tourism just started to boom.  As a side note, you could have booked a room at Casa Montego in 1980 for $25 a night.

A true story from someone who had a "guaranteed affair"

If you come on this blog you might see the dancing lady on the lower right part of this website.  What's that all about?  It's about AshleyMadison.com.   Ashley Madison is the worlds largest dating website that also has a "guaranteed affair" package.  With this package you pay $249 then get full access to the site.  If after 3 months you don't hook up, you get your money back, it's that simple.  (see their site for the exact details)

But what exactly is it?  What it is is a dating website with a different edge, they guarantee that you'll have a sex filled affair!  The site has been featured on Hannity, Howard Stern, TIME, BusinessWeek, Sports Illustrated and Maxim.   They have over 10 million members and every 60 seconds, another woman joins looking for discreet sex.

I have a blog follower who lives in Massachusetts.  I'm not going to say her name but she did send me one really sexy photo that she used on her online profile with AshleyMadison.  She signed up and started getting all sort of guys contacting her.  After chatting up a few guys she then met 4 guys in person till she found the one and then they had...well...sex!

In her words, "I highly recommend it to any women out there looking to spice up their sex life."

For her it was easy, you can see she's a busty babe and with females, Ashley Madison lets them chat for "free."  If you're a dude, you're gonna have to pay to see the ladies you might have a chance hooking up with.  But all the ladies that join have one thing in common, they're on the hunt, just like YOU, for a booty call.

If anyone else has any true stories, contact me via my "contact me" button on the site.  Thanks!

The Haunted Caribbean - story 3

Continuing in this 3 part series we go back to Jamaica, to Manchester Parish...

The legend of Skull Point Church - Google Map

You almost have to wonder if it was not inevitable that a church in a place with a creepy name like skull point would end up haunted.  Skull Point, located in Manchester Parish, Jamaica is a small community where an ancient courthouse is a national monument.  But ghost hunters will find little of interest at that historic spot and will instead be drawn to the abandoned church and cemetery.

Local legend has it that a slave name James Knight became a Christian and began preaching to the other slaves in the area.  Upset by his brazenness, the slave owner had Knight killed.  The killers then displayed his head stuck on a pole to deter any other slaves from following in Knight's footsteps.  It is believed that because of the violence of his death and his denial of a proper burial, James Knight's spirit still roams the land.

A movie trailor for "The Rum Diary"

There's a new movie coming out with Johnny Depp that's based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson.   Johnny Depp plays journalist Paul Kemp, Thompson's alter ego, who journeys to Puerto Rico and finds himself in a life filled with booze, babes and corruption.

I can't really put a thumb on what exactly the movies about, but from watching the tailor, I definitely want to hang around Puerto Rico in the 1950's swigging away on rum!

Stay longer on your Celebrity Cruise for $59

Celebrity Cruises is betting that some passengers will take advantage of their new program, ""Extend Your Stay."   The program allows cruise guests to stay till the afternoon instead of being kicked off early in the morning, like most passengers.

(stay later on your ship for $59 per person, kids are $29.50 each)

If you do choose this option you'll get access to a number of public areas including the pool, fitness center and spa but you still must must vacate cabins in the morning (by 9 am, one hour later than the standard time).  So if you're just not ready to end your stay on the cruise ship you can book the extended stay by signing up for it on-board ships at the guest relations desk.

The Haunted Caribbean - story 2

Continuing in this 3 part series we look at a story coming out of Key West, Florida...

The legend of Robert the Doll

Robert, otherwise known as Robert the Doll, is a doll that was once owned by Key West  painter and author Robert Eugene Otto. The doll, which is allegedly cursed, has become a fixture of ghost tours in the Key West area since it was inducted into the Fort East Martello Museum.  Aesthetically, Robert resembles an early 20th century American Naval officer.  Contrary to popular belief, however, the doll's hair is not made of human hair, but rather, it consists of a synthetic material resembling wool yarn.

Eugene was given the doll in 1904 by a servant who, according to legend, was skilled in black magic and voodoo and was displeased with the family. Soon afterward it became clear that there was something eerie about the doll. Eugene's parents said they often heard him talking to the doll and that the doll appeared to be talking back. Although at first they assumed that Eugene was simply answering himself in a changed voice, they later believed that the doll was actually speaking.

Neighbors claimed to see the doll moving from window to window when the family was out. The Otto family swore that sometimes the doll would emit a terrifying giggle and that they caught glimpses of it running from room to room. In the night Eugene would scream, and when his parents ran to the room they would find furniture knocked over and Eugene in bed, looking incredibly scared, telling them that "Robert did it!".

When Eugene died in 1974, the doll was left in the attic until the house was bought again. The new family included a ten year old girl, who became Robert's new owner. It was not long before the girl began screaming out in the night, claiming that Robert moved about the room and even attempted to attack her on multiple occasions. More than thirty years later, she still tells interviewers that the doll was alive and wanted to kill her.

Individuals who desire to visit Robert in the Fort East Martello Museum and wish to take a picture of him, according to legend, the person must ask the doll politely, and if he does not agree (by tipping his head to one side) and the individual takes a picture anyway, then the doll will curse the person and their family.

Average salaries of airline pilots and stewardess

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2009, half of all of commercial pilots made a median annual wage of $65,840, with the bottom 10% earning $32,520 and the top 10% making $120,550.

Looking at the same stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the median annual wage for flight attendants is $43,350 per year, however, you may start out making as little as $14,000 to $19,000 per year.

Naturally, in either profession, it all depends on the amount of flights worked and your time on the job.  Rookies make less and seniority pays more.

Did the numbers surprise you?  If anything, I figured the pilots would be earning more.  Shoot, they're skilled and have our lives in their hands.  Being a stewardess is hard, I'm sure, but they really only have our snacks and drinks in their hands...really.

Yeahhh...I can sell stuff on Amazon again!

If anyone has been a follower of my blog for the last year and a half, 2 years in January, you'll know that I used to be able to sell things on my site.  Then California Jerry Brown signed some type of bill that took away my ability to sell things via a website!   I was pissed, but I had no choice in the matter.

Well today I got an e-mail from the good folks over at Amazon stating the program is back!   According to the e-mail, "California Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation repealing the law that had forced us to terminate our California Associates."    Yippie!

What does all of this mean?  It means I can start selling shit on my page again and make maybe $5 on a good month.  :-D   Keep your eyes out for travel products that 1/2 the time I end up buying myself then I give reviews.  Most products focus around travel products, electronic products and music.

Sooo....check out the NEW Amazon Kindle Fire!  I'll be doing another, more in depth review of the Fire at a later date.
