By all account Hedonism's 30th Halloween went off in spoootacular fashion!  I got friends down there now who Facebook'ed me saying then were having a blast, while making us very jealous!   The resort had a show following dinner and a contest.  After that crowds moved onto the disco, the piano bar, the hot tubs and perhaps...even to their rooms.

Super scary Haunted Houses

Man I sure love October - the cooler weather, football comes back, the World Series and the overall naughtiness of Halloween.  When I went searching for scary haunted houses I found a way cool website, www.americahaunts.com, that has some of the Nation's best. 

Here's the 411 on two of these features haunted houses...

How about a haunted house in Kansas City called "The Beast?"  It comes complete with a 10,000 werewolf forest where you're require to find an exit in complete darkness.  Not to mention the LIVE alligators that are in the scary forest swamp.  Cool!

The Haunted Caribbean - story 3

Continuing in this 3 part series we go back to Jamaica, to Manchester Parish...

You almost have to wonder if it was not inevitable that a church in a place with a creepy name like skull point would end up haunted.  Skull Point, located in Manchester Parish, Jamaica is a small community where an ancient courthouse is a national monument.  But ghost hunters will find little of interest at that historic spot and will instead be drawn to the abandoned church and cemetery.

 

 Local legend has it that a slave name James Knight became a Christian and began preaching to the other slaves in the area.  Upset by his brazenness, the slave owner had Knight killed.  The killers then displayed his head stuck on a pole to deter any other slaves from following in Knight's footsteps.  It is believed that because of the violence of his death and his denial of a proper burial, James Knight's spirit still roams the land.

Continuing in this 3 part series we look at a story coming out of Key West, Florida...

 The legend of Robert the Doll

Robert, otherwise known as Robert the Doll, is a doll that was once owned by Key West  painter and author Robert Eugene Otto. The doll, which is allegedly cursed, has become a fixture of ghost tours in the Key West area since it was inducted into the Fort East Martello Museum.  Aesthetically, Robert resembles an early 20th century American Naval officer.  Contrary to popular belief, however, the doll's hair is not made of human hair, but rather, it consists of a synthetic material resembling wool yarn.

Eugene was given the doll in 1904 by a servant who, according to legend, was skilled in black magic and voodoo and was displeased with the family. Soon afterward it became clear that there was something eerie about the doll. Eugene's parents said they often heard him talking to the doll and that the doll appeared to be talking back. Although at first they assumed that Eugene was simply answering himself in a changed voice, they later believed that the doll was actually speaking.

 Neighbors claimed to see the doll moving from window to window when the family was out. The Otto family swore that sometimes the doll would emit a terrifying giggle and that they caught glimpses of it running from room to room. In the night Eugene would scream, and when his parents ran to the room they would find furniture knocked over and Eugene in bed, looking incredibly scared, telling them that "Robert did it!".

When Eugene died in 1974, the doll was left in the attic until the house was bought again. The new family included a ten year old girl, who became Robert's new owner. It was not long before the girl began screaming out in the night, claiming that Robert moved about the room and even attempted to attack her on multiple occasions. More than thirty years later, she still tells interviewers that the doll was alive and wanted to kill her.

Individuals who desire to visit Robert in the Fort East Martello Museum and wish to take a picture of him, according to legend, the person must ask the doll politely, and if he does not agree (by tipping his head to one side) and the individual takes a picture anyway, then the doll will curse the person and their family.

This years Fantasy Fest has a new theme - "Aquatic Afrolic" and it's all due to go down this year on October 21st to the 30th, 2011.   I'm not including each and every event, but I'm going to highlight a few of them.  

If you need a hotel, you might just be in luck, I did a check on Kayak.com  and found rooms from $230 and up, most of which required a 3 night stay.  But, if you're willing to drive in from 10 miles up the keys, the prices and availability are better.  ($175 and up)   These prices are sure to change, check any travel booking site to try your luck.

The Haunted Caribbean - story 1

Well, it's October now and what better month is there for telling spoooooky ghost stories?  But this is a travel blog that has a focus on the beautiful Caribbean, are there ghost stories to be found?  Yes!  Back in June of 2011 I blogged about Rose Hall's Great House where we found out about a haunted house that's on the northern part of Jamaica.   But there are more stories to be told!   

In this 3 part series we'll start off with the Eden Browne Estate story that takes place on the sunny island of Nevis that's located in the Eastern Caribbean...

Nobody has lived at the Eden Browne Estate on Nevis for more than 150 years, and for good reason:  the property is said to be haunted by the ghosts of a groom and his best man who killed each other during a wedding in 1822.  In fact, the dispute that led to a fatal duel -- and a life of heartbreak for the would-be bride -- took place on the same day that the property was to be christened as the Garden of Eden at Browne's Estate.  The arranged marriage of Caroline James Beard and John Higgins was intended to bring together two prosperous families, but its bloody conclusion resulted in a curse that persists until this very day.

The estate was considered cursed and never live in, though it was farmed.  The Nevisians claim that if you go sit at Eden Browne under the dark of the moon, around midnight you will hear the two men arguing and the bride comes wafting through, crying for her lost love.

And that is the legend of Eden Browne!

Fantasy Fest - Key West

Oh fantasy fest.  If you live in Florida no doubt you know what it is.  How do I explain it in a nutshell?  I'd say a bunch of party minded, Florida loving nuts get together and party on Halloween!   It's your chance to get crazy with other Hedonist minded folks. 

The first FF was in 1979 when two Key West businessmen came up with the idea to stimulate business.  I'd say they were successful!   Attendance most years exceeds 100,000 people.   This street party is held each October during that last week leading up to Halloween.  

This year, 2010, the festivities kick off on Friday October 22nd and wrap up October 31st on Halloween Sunday.   For complete list of events try the official site located here, Schedule of events.  Look for a Fetish party, fantasy parade, dungeon of fetish party and more!

Nudity and body-painting are a big part of the celebration so this is most definitely an Adults Only party.  Each year local artists paint up daring women (and some men) with some rather cool designs.  Sample body-painting (rated R).   Warning, if you do go and get topless/nude watch out you WILL end up on the internet.

So where to stay?   Rooms are at a premium and often times booked up to a year in advance so you'll just have to do your best and call around.  You can always book further up the keys and drive in for the events.  If you can book at Marrero's Guest Mansion <---from another post of mine, you'll be in like company beings the resort has a nude pool and daily happy hours.
