Time to BBQ people!

Summer is on full swing so I wanted to share with you MY favorite way to BBQ.  Here's how this sucker works, you light it up, cook your food and toss the entire thing in the trash!  (once it cools)

(The EZ Grill that costs around $9 at most stores)

Once you get the grill good and hot why not try making some Jamaican style jerk chicken right at home?   Sure, it's not like being back "home" but give it a try.  Below is a recipe, serve that chicken with some Red Stripe and Bob Marley and you might, just might think you're back in Jamaica for a few seconds.

Jamaican Style Barbecued Chicken

  • 8 medium scallions, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ to 1 Scotch bonnet chile, seeded and finely chopped or
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon Scotch bonnet hot sauce
  • 1½ tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • One 4-pound chicken
  • Jamaican Barbeque Sauce
  • 2 cups wood chips, soaked in water for 1 hour, then drained
 MARINATE THE CHICKEN:

Combine all of the marinade ingredients in a food processor and puree to a paste. Run your fingers under the breast skin of the chicken to loosen it. Spoon half of the marinade into the neck and central cavities and rub the remaining marinade over the breast meat under the skin. Put the chicken in a sturdy plastic bag and marinate in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours, turning the bag a couple of times.

Light a grill for indirect cooking (with wood or charcoal on the periphery of the grill and meat in middle) and set a drip pan in the center. When the temperature reaches 350 degree, toss the wood chips onto the coals or add them to a smoker box. Remove the chicken from the bag and set it in the center of the grill, away from the flames. Cover tightly and cook for 1 hour. Brush the chicken with the barbecue sauce and cook, covered, for about 45 minutes longer; baste with sauce from time to time. The chicken is done when it is deep brown and the juices run clear when the inner thigh is pierced. Let the chicken rest for about 15 minutes before carving.

Royal Caribbean to open 'Historic Falmouth Jamaica' port in 2011

Falmouth Jamaica is about 18 miles east of Montego Bay on Jamaica's North coast, Google Map of Falmouth.  Come January of 2011 Royal Caribbean will open up it's 170 million dollar port for it's cruise ships!   Royal Caribbean's senior vice president of Land Operations and President of Royal Celebrity Tours, calls the port a "marquee destination."

He says the port will be done up in classic Georgian style and predicts passengers arriving there "will feel like they are in the old world of the Caribbean and find themselves availed of numerous shopping and authentic dining opportunities."

Falmouth was meticulously planned from the start, with wide streets in a regular grid, adequate water supply, and public buildings. It even had piped water before New York City.  200 years ago Falmouth used to be Jamaica's top cruise port.  While I don't see Royal Caribbean's new port bringing that status back I do see it as a very good thing for local residents to earn some tourism dollars.

Notable residents include Bob Marley's son, Ky-Mani Marley and Ben Johnson - a former Olympian.

Who is Christopher Dudus Coke?

The citizens of Kingston have been protecting Christopher Dudus Coke.  Why?  Who is this man?

The quick answer?  Christopher Dudus Coke is a drug dealer in Jamaica who also is seen as a Robin Hood of his local community.  He provides for the citizens when they don't always have any one else to depend on.  Meals, medical treatment, schooling - he's done it all.

Dudus was born in 1969 the son of a Father who ran the same notorious Jamaica gang "The Shower Posse".  Named that way for the rain of bullets that the gang will drop down on anyone that might stand in their way.  The elder Dudus was burned alive in prison awaiting trial.  The Shower Posse runs a huge chain of drug exports and with the money they get they buy weapons to endorse their ways.

(the community rallies behind Mr. Coke)

The Jamaican goverment recenetly decided to allow Mr. Coke to be extradited to the US due to President Obama's push to make Jamaica prove they are serious about stopping the drug trade.  Alto Coke's posse has close ties to Jamaica's Labour Party they've decided to round up Dudus and ship him off to America.

This is where the problem began.  The community wants their caretaker and has put up one hell of a fight to keep him.  As of May 26th, 2010 reports have as high as 60 deaths in this struggle.  Baracades, fireboming the police stations by the Shower Posse and more have caused chaos in Kingston's Tivoli Gardens neighborhood.

(courteous of uk.reuters.com)

As a lover of the island I hope this wraps up quickly for everyone involved.  It should also be noted that other parts of the island are JUST FINE.  I spoke to a friend out of Negril and things over there are completely peaceful.  So don't let this pocket of trouble in Kingston totally change your mind about visiting the island.

Kingston is a war zone!

Here's tonight's news report out of Jamaica.  We hope the trouble in Jamaica will be resolved quickly and safely!

Man who visits a nude beach has his penis bit by a spider!

File this one under OUCH!  A 22 year old Canadian was snoozing away after a visit to a nude beach in New Zealand a few weeks back when he woke up to find his penis swollen and in pain.  By the time the man reached hospital, his penis was severely swollen, his blood pressure was up and his heartbeat was racing.

(The penis attacker, a Katipo Spider)

Apparently, he had left his shorts in the sand dunes where assumable the spider crawled inside and attacked later.  He was treated with anti-venom at local hospitals for 16 days before leaving for Canada.  The good news is that he's fine now but YIKES, it's something to think about!

A special look at The Liberty Hotel in Boston, MA

We have a travel date that lands us in Boston coming up soon.  Naturally being travel fans we're excited to find a hotel in Boston that'll make our travel experience one-of-a-kind and exciting.   In a post from a few months back I touched on a hotel named The Liberty Hotel in Boston and today I'm going to extend that look...

The Liberty Hotel is first and foremost a converted jail to a modern hip hotel!

The Charles Street Jail in 1851

The Liberty Hotel today!

On September 5th, 2007 the hotel opened up in this former jail at the cost of around $150,000,000.   This luxury showplace sits at the foot of Boston's posh Beacon Hill neighborhood overlooking the Charles River. Google Map to Liberty.

Though extensively updated, the jail's granite exterior and light-filled interiors remain mostly unchanged. Soaring 90 feet, the jail's central rotunda -- with its windows and historic catwalks -- was beautifully preserved and forms the lobby and public spaces.

Within the historic building, the Liberty offers 18 brick-walled guest rooms, as well as a restaurant and bar and meeting and event rooms.  Across the courtyard garden (once the jail's exercise yard), a new 16-story tower houses 280 guest rooms.

Four venues, CLINK, Alibi, Scampo, and the Liberty Bar anchor the Boston luxury hotel’s 298 luxurious rooms and easy access to the city from its prime downtown location at the foot of historic Beacon Hill make The Liberty Hotel the perfect spot for experiencing all that Boston offers.

You want amenities?    Concierge service, complimentary high speed internet access (wired or WiFi), a 24-hour fitness center, valet parking, in-room safes and free bikes you can use to peddle your way around Boston!   The Liberty Hotel is also pet friendly for those of you with 4 legged friends when you travel.

They're website is amazing and you can see it for yourself here: Liberty Hotel Official Site.  They're also offering a "Guilty Pleasures Romance" package offers champagne delivered to your room along with chocolate dipped strawberries, an intimacy kit followed by either in room breakfast or breakfast in Clink with a late late 3pm check out time.  Round II anyone?  :-D

Prices for that kit are based on a 2 night stay starting from around $350 a night, and like I said in my last post, at least that's cheaper than bail.

Will the Gulf's oil slick mess up Florida's tourism this summer?

With 2,000 barrels of oil spewing into the Gulf Gulf-Coast tourist hot spots are now worried about this summers business.   After all, who wants to lay out on a beach with oil splashing up on you?

But will it really be that bad?  Nobody seems to know yet but that uncertainty has pre-booked visitors questioning if they should cancel their plans.  And if you're gonna visit a US beach this summer one might think about other beach hotspots in case the worst should happen.

Satellite image of the oil slick from the Deepwater Horizon explosion.
(NASA/GSFC: Terra satellite)

The good news is - they have SOME of the leak under control as of May 19th after about a month of uncontrollable leaking.  Time will tell what will happen...

Old findings in the waters of Negril!

Off the blue waters of Bloody Bay in Negril come these photos of some old old shipping artifacts.

(a way cool and way old ship anchor)

These have been reportedly been in the waters since at LEAST 1960's when people from that time spoke about them.  How long have they really been in the waters?   1600's?   1700's?   1800's?

(a way old ship canyon)

The Western edge of Jamaica has seen it's shipping and pirate days.   This is where the UK government tracked down Calico Jack Rackham and hung him in Kingston shortly there after.   In 1814 fifty warships and 6,600 men sailed from Negril to tackle the American rebels and were trounced in the Battle of New Orleans.

Natural travel in the "Land down under"!

It appears that folks in Australia love getting naked in their travel and leisure plans.  And they're MANY public beaches where it's officially OK to strip down!   Toss in a bunch of resorts and you got yourself one country that's nudist friendly.

New South Wales

Official nude beaches in the New South Wales area
Obelisk Beach at the southern side of the National Park, Sydney
Lady Bay, 12km north east of Watsons Bay, Sydney
Armands Beach, 10km south of Bermagui, NSW
Samurai Beach at Anna Bay along the north coast

Also, in the area is Twin Falls Nude Retreat Twin Falls, a resort that's laid out on 100 acres of rain-forest and bushland.  At this resort clothing is not even optional, in other words - you WILL get naked.  It's mostly aimed at couples who enjoy being naked with a heavy emphasis on nature lovers.  Accommodation ranges from unpowered camp sites and a rustic cabin to comfortable B&B rooms in the main homestead.

(Twin Falls nature walk)

Northern Territory

Official nude beaches in the Northern Territory area
Casuarina Beach in Darwin

Also when in the north check out Top End Naturist Retreat Top End for a 100 acre private retreat where clothing is NOT allowed.  Camping again is par for the course at this retreat and it also caters to families.  I'm not personally into family nudism but to each their own.   The resort is also close to Territory Wildlife Park so this is the perfect base to see some of the Northern Territory’s finest natural wonders.
(Top End Land)

Western Australia

Official nude beaches in the Western Austria area
Warnbro Beach near the coastal town of Rockingham
Ten Mile Lagoon, near the seaside town of Esperance
Cable Beach, a 22.5km long beach in Broome

Also, check out  Sunseekers Nudist Club Sun Seekers, a resort that's been in action since 1962!   It's walking distance from the John Forrest National Park and has a large pool, camping locations and had a large clubhouse for social gatherings.

Frontier Airlines let's your pet fly too!

So if you can't leave fluffy, skippy and spot at home then book your next trip using Frontier as your airline. Why?  You can take your pets on board and it's only $75 extra each way.  Check out the list of pets you can bring along:  small dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and small birds.   Cat discrimination!

(sorry fluffy)

This charge has sometimes been MORE than the actual ticket for the owners of the pets!   But the $75 charge matches what Southwest charges and both of these airlines run some of the best rates.   Your pets must have all heath records and be able to prove it to the airline.   Spokeswoman Lindsey Purves said customers should have their vet complete a health form for the animal within 10 days of the trip.

So alllllll aboard Ace Ventura.

Courtney Starrburst + Hedo II = Hot pics!!!

Courtney Starrburst went to Hedo II over the summer of 2009 to shoot these photos for Smooth Girl's annual trek to Jamaica.  She's 23 years old and from the City of Brother Love, Philly!

Do you like getting sick and puking on a crusie ship?

Yeah, we don't either!  So summer is here and people tend to travel just a bit more.  Car, plane, boat, train!  However you mode of travel you'll be subject to the motions of your craft.  Some people get sick, others don't.  But in case you are one of the unlucky (or if you're considering going on a cruise) I'd suggest getting one of these things!

Now this bad boy will set you back anywhere from $90 to $150 but trust me, if you're on a ship in the middle of the ocean feeling sick as a dog you'd pay that and more to make it go away.   What this thing does is give you "gentle" nerve stimulation that the FDA feels so confident it'll work that even they approved this device.   Now reviews have said the zolting you get, depending on the setting, is noticeable but you do get used to it.

So I guess for insurance purposes if you're going on a long cruise this summer you've had past issues on the sea, I'd say get one of these if it's within budget.  Otherwise, good luck matie!

Summer reggae music - a good click for your ears.

More summer beats for you!

3 Jamaican tourist spots you MAY not know about!

The Falls, the resorts...if you've been to Jamaica chances are you've seen a little bit of both.  But what about places that perhaps you've not been to?

1.  Martha Brae River - Montego Bay, Jamaica

Martha Brae River is a lazy river that winds it's way along the shade giving trees about 20 miles from Montego Bay and 40 miles from Ocho Rios along Jamaica's North Coast.   And to guide you along this mystical river are licensed raft captains that will expertly transport you.   The "raft" itself is a 30 foot long bamboo vessel that strongly supports all on board.   You get to kick back and take in the sights in this 3 mile 1 hour journey as the raft captain will point out features along the way.

The cost is around $110 to $125 but this also includes round trip transportation to and from your local hotel and a complimentary drink!    For more info check out these guys at, Jamaica Rafting.

2.  Blue Hole Mineral Springs - Negril, Jamaica

Wanna check out a big giant hole in Jamaica?  You're in luck!  Located just Southeast of Negril by 20 mins and it's basically, a big mineral hole in the ground!    You can stand at the rim and jump in if you dare or watch the locals show you how it's done instead.   There's a ladder you can climb down and chill in these waters.   Past visitors rave about the cool guys working there, the good reggae they play and the memories.

It only cost around $7 bucks to use the springs but you might find yourself enjoying food, drink and tipping the locals for their diving shows, but that's up to you.  For more info:  Blue Hole in Jamaica Blog.

3.  Hooves Horse Riding Tours - Ochos Rios, Jamaica

Here's your chance to ride a Jamaican horse in the hills of Jamaica or even right on the beach (and in the water)!  Who would not want to try that?  There's a cool group called Hooves that was started in the 90's by a Jamaican and his English wife where they rescue horses and they come to retire and please the tourists that come.  The entire event takes about 4 hours including free local transportation.   Time on the horse?  About 2.5 hours and depending on costs you can do it from $90 per person.   Also available to purchase, photos of you on that beast and drinks to keep you cool.

To check out these guys visit them at their website:  Hooves in Jamaica.

Rum - A Jamaican specialty!

Think about the world in 1749.  American was land back then, no cars, no planes...vastly different than today.  Except for one thing - Appleton Estates in Jamaica was making rum.  This post is going to explore this Caribbean drink and from inception to your glass at home.

(Ladies near Montego Bay in 1900 preparing
sugar cane, the start of all good rum)

The first distillation of rum took place on the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean in the 17th century. Plantation slaves first discovered that molasses, a by-product of the sugar refining process, can be fermented into alcohol.  Later, distillation of these alcoholic by-products concentrated the alcohol and removed impurities, producing the first true rums. Tradition suggests that rum first originated on the island of Barbados.

(sugar cane)

But rum has it's place in dark history, in 1700 alone, approximately 25,000 Africans were enslaved and transported across the Atlantic Ocean. Up to two-thirds of these slaves were bound for sugar cane plantations in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Brazil to produce "White Gold."

Soon after Rum's popularity spread to Colonial America where there are estimates that had every man, woman, or child drinking an average of 3 Imperial gallons (13.5 liters) of rum each year.  Kids pounding down rum, that's kinda nuts!

A triangular trade was established between Africa, the Caribbean, and the colonies to help support this new need for sugar and the rum that it produced.  The exchange of slaves, molasses, and rum was quite profitable, and the disruption to the trade caused by the Sugar Act in 1764 may have even helped cause the American Revolution.

(Modern rum barrels fermenting your rum)

The process of creating rum

Rum is created by mixing this sugary molasses or sugarcane juice with yeast and water to start the fermentation process.   You see, there is no set standard in rum production.  Each country, each plant, has their own special processes unlike scotch or other drinks.  In Jamaica the yeast used us typically "dunder" which is a yeast rich foam from past fermentations.

(Joy Spence - Master Blender
for Appleton Rum)

After this blend is distilled it's sent off for aging which can be done in old school barrels like you see above or even in huge metal drums.  Depending on the quality of rum they're trying to make they'll leave it there for a year up to 30 years as in the case of Appelton's special $300 to $400 dollar bottle they released in 2008.  (only 1,440 bottles were released)

*BONUS DRINK RECIPE*

2010's Official "Cocktail of the Tale" Winning Drink
"Death in the South Pacific"

0.75 oz. Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old rum
0.75 oz. Rhum Clement VSOP rum
0.5 oz. Grand Marnier
0.33 oz. Trader Tiki’s Orgeat Syrup
0.33 oz. Fee Brothers Falernum
3 dashes Absinthe
0.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
0.5 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
0.5 oz. Fee Brothers Grenadine
0.5 oz. Cruzan Blackstrap rum

Add all ingredients except for the grenadine and Cruzan Blackstrap to a Zombie shell glass and fill with crushed ice. Swizzle the drink well to mix and frost the glass and then pour in grenadine. Overfill the glass with crushed ice and then pour in Cruzan Blackstrap.

Garnish:
Take a bamboo skewer and put a brandied cherry through at the very top followed by 1 pineapple leaf (insert through the middle) and then cut off skin from 1 large orange slice and then cut the strips in half. Insert the ends through the skewer having them hang on opposite sides of each other. Then insert the straw through the loop in the bamboo skewer. It should look like a guy hanging off of the drink (cherry=head, pineapple leaf= arms, citrus peel dangling away from each other are the legs)

(The "Death in the South Pacific" in it's full glory)

So maybe you like sipping on some rum in Jamaica or your favorite vacation get-a-way.  Maybe you just like having it at dinner at your local restaurant.  Perhaps even at home!  Anytime is a good time for rum to put you back in that Caribbean frame of mind.
