We love a good party just as much as anyone else, BUT, be safe people when you're out after a celebration if you've had anything to drink. Los Angeles Police setup a few DUI checkpoint stings over the weekend to catch people that got a little carried away with holiday drinking.
(The U.S. Supreme Court has determined that DUI
checkpoints are legal and minimally invasive)
- Most states go by .08% legal limit when drinking
- Court costs start around $1,000 in most states for your 1st offense
- You can get jail time for DUI's, mostly on 2nd and beyond occurrences
LAPD set up at least two DUI checkpoints with one that was located in Studio City over the weekend that reportedly nabbed close to 45 drunk drivers and pulled over countless others that got tickets on infractions such as expired tags, lights out on their cars and other minor things.
I've never gotten a DUI (knocks on wood) and I don't plan on getting one anytime soon. Just play it smart and you won't have to worry about checkpoints cause you'll be sober! If not, you'll be calling some high cost attorney to help you out on your day in court.
The PD's need to do this more often. It's time well spent and a wise way to spend our $. The fines imposed on offenders during the check point may have been enough revenue to offset the expense. It would be interesting to know what the Return on Investment was. Of course, you can't put a price on lives saved by getting those 45 drunks off of LA's busy streets.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed Mellisa. Far too many people suck down 4-5 drinks then hop behind the wheel!
ReplyDeleteSure there may have been an occasion when someone was fired but the vast majority of folks that were involved in non injury, first time DUIs did not lose their job.
