Royal Caribbean to open 'Historic Falmouth Jamaica' port in 2011

Falmouth Jamaica is about 18 miles east of Montego Bay on Jamaica's North coast, Google Map of Falmouth.  Come January of 2011 Royal Caribbean will open up it's 170 million dollar port for it's cruise ships!   Royal Caribbean's senior vice president of Land Operations and President of Royal Celebrity Tours, calls the port a "marquee destination."

He says the port will be done up in classic Georgian style and predicts passengers arriving there "will feel like they are in the old world of the Caribbean and find themselves availed of numerous shopping and authentic dining opportunities."

Falmouth was meticulously planned from the start, with wide streets in a regular grid, adequate water supply, and public buildings. It even had piped water before New York City.  200 years ago Falmouth used to be Jamaica's top cruise port.  While I don't see Royal Caribbean's new port bringing that status back I do see it as a very good thing for local residents to earn some tourism dollars.

Notable residents include Bob Marley's son, Ky-Mani Marley and Ben Johnson - a former Olympian.

  3. The Gleaner says the port's debut has been pushed back to January, when Royal Caribbean's 3,114-passenger Navigator of the Seas will arrive. The port is NOT READY yet.

  4. IMO Falmouth is treading a fine line between a synthetic port-of-call and a proper Jamaican destination - lets hope the latter wins out!
