Another cruise ship loses power!

It was just last month we were all talking about the cruise ship Ocean Star Pacific that had an on-board fire causing the ship to lose power.  Now we got the 1,756-passenger MSC Opera losing power while it was full of passengers in the Baltic.  It suffered an electrical failure that caused the power loss.

Passengers on the MSC Opera were left without hot food or running water and even some toilets were being reported not flushing.  Yuck!   As of Tuesday May 17th tug boats were sent to tow the vessel back to a port near Stockholm, Sweden.  The cruise had begun on May 7th out of Southampton, England and was to include stops in Copenhagen, Helsinki and St. Petersburg.  Passengers were given a voucher to cover the cost of the cruise.

The Sahara is Vegas is CLOSED

For the last 58 years you've been able to head to Las Vegas and check in at The Sahara Hotel & Casino, but now you can't.  The last guests are checking out yesterday and soon the legendary hotel will be imploded.   The hotel once showcased some of the biggest stars on the Strip, including comedians Don Rickles and Johnny Carson and singers Dean Martin and Tina Turner.  The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon originated from the Sahara for 20 years.

Unfortunately, about 1,050 jobs will be lost in the process and further bookings to the hotel are being routed to it's partner hotel, Circus Circus.  With hard times hitting Vegas even harder than most US cities, the prospect of finding other jobs is not good.  So here's to an end of a iconic Vegas hotel that's been part of Sin City since 1952.

Miley Cyrus chills in Rio de Janeiro

Miley Cyrus was spotted at famous Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio de Janeiro last week in a sexy bikini.  Then her and her Mother took a tour of the city including a night trip to famous Statue of the Redeemer, see that here. 

She arrived to Brazil on May 11 and has been touring South America since late last month.  Maybe she's down there checking out Rio de Janeiro out of curiosity for the new movie "Rio" that's making a big splash in theaters.

A Holland America cruise ship strikes ice in Alaska

Holland America's 1,916-passenger ship 'Westerdam' hit ice in Alaska causing hull damage below the waterline this week.  Titanic anyone?   The incident happened on Tuesday the 10th of May in Alaska's Yakutat Bay.  High winds were the cause of the accident but the good news was the hull just got dented up and was NOT damaged to the point where water could penetrate it.

The ship continued on it's way not missing a beat and met up with the Coast Guard on Wednesday in Sitka, Alaska.  The Coast Guard said the damage to the ship is approximately 15 feet below the waterline.  Both the agency and Holland America say there were no injuries during the incident and no release of oil or other pollutants.
